- Requires sufficient professional experience to assure competence as a fully trained scientist in a specific discipline or area of expertise.
- Supervises work of lab staff, oversees execution of assigned tasks.
- Establishes research objectives and methodology, designs procedures, conducts research projects, analyzes and interprets results.
- May publish and present research as author and co-author.
- May lead or train Classified Research staff and Post Doctoral Fellows

Ph.D, M.D., D.O. or D.V.M. in related field and at least 1 year of related experience required.
